The Recessional: A Symbolic Departure With Sacred Purpose
As the ceremonial rites conclude, the Order exits the sacred space in what is known as the recessional — a formal and solemn procession symbolizing a return to the world, now renewed in duty and spirit.
At the head of this sacred departure walks the Grand Sword Bearer, carrying the Grand Sword upright, hilt at eye level, leading the Grand Master, Grand Priory Officers, and banner bearers with reverence and authority.
The Grand Sword represents divine truth, justice, and spiritual defense. Its upright bearing symbolizes vigilance, purity of purpose, and unwavering commitment to Christ. It is not a weapon of war, but a sword of honour — carried not in conquest, but in service.
To follow the Grand Sword is to walk in the path of tradition, truth, and Templar obedience to sacred vows.
